Bobby Brown arrested for DUI

Last month, South Carolina residents probably read about Bobby Brown in various newspaper headlines when his former wife, Whitney Houston, passed away. This week, the R&B singer is in the news for a very different reason--driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to reports, Brown was originally pulled over by authorities for using his mobile phone and driving at the same time. However, within the routine traffic stop, police performed an alcohol breath test. Reportedly, the singer had a blood alcohol level of 0.08. Authorities arrested the singer for DUI; however, he was released on $5,000 bail.

This story is a reminder that anyone can get arrested for DUI. If Brown is convicted, he could face serious repercussions.

If you, like Brown, are confronting charges for drunk driving, you should know what to expect. The criminal justice system can be very confusing. Furthermore, charges and sentencing can differ greatly, depending on the particular set of circumstances surrounding an arrest.

For example, in 2009, the penalties for drunk driving changed in South Carolina. Now, they are based on a tiered system dependent on the result of a Datamaster test. The higher the Datamaster reading, the greater the sentence will be, if convicted. As numbers increase, so do fines and the number of days of incarceration.

All of this may be difficult to understand. For this reason, if you are confronting criminal charges for DUI, you may want to look into your legal rights and responsibilities. If you speak to a lawyer, he or she can inform you about the new law.
