South Carolina Supreme Court upholds convict's rights

Everyone probably knows that criminal suspects are entitled to a fair trial. But, it may not always be apparent what the words "fair trial" mean. Numerous rules and safeguards exist in order to protect suspects' rights, such as the right to criminal defense counsel and the right to remain silent. These safeguards are necessary because when a crime is committed, authorities often feel pressure to find the wrongdoers and hold them responsible as soon as possible. It is possible that such pressure could unduly influence law enforcement officials into taking action more out of a desire to hold someone accountable than relying on facts and evidence.

Columbia man faces criminal charges after fleeing police

Police in Irmo, South Carolina, allege that an officer recently pulled over a car on Lake Murray Boulevard only to have that driver speed off once the officer got out of his cruiser. The officer then hopped back into his vehicle and chased the car for several miles, onto several highways. The driver reportedly stopped his car on Highway 277 and took off on foot into nearby woods

South Carolina man pleads guilty to animal cruelty

A 61-year-old South Carolina man recently plead guilty to one count of animal cruelty and was sentenced to a year in prison for watching a dog fight. In 2011, the man was one of five people arrested in relation to an alleged dog fighting ring. It is not clear whether or not he had hired a criminal defense attorney.
