Man arrested for drunk driving after hitting parked cars, tree

Alcohol can impair judgment, which is why it is dangerous to consume it and then drive. Driving while under the influence led a man in Greenville -- about 90 minutes outside Columbia -- to hit parked cars, a parking garage toll booth and a tree, among other objects. Police arrested him for drunk driving and several other offenses shortly after the accidents.

While leaving a parking garage on the evening of April 7, the 35-year-old man hit two parked cars and the pay booth before hitting and breaking the garage's exit arm. The man then drove down the street until he drove up on the sidewalk and hit a tree.

However, the series of events did not end there. Police say, the man then turned around -- with only three remaining tires on the vehicle -- and drove the wrong way on a one-way street. He got into an accident with another car at an intersection and drove two more blocks before finally stopping. Police arrested him on the spot.

The man faces various charges, including hit-and-run, DUI, assault and battery and another driving-related offense. Fortunately, there were no major injuries involved.

It is unknown what the man's blood alcohol content was, but it must be at least 0.08 in order for him to be charged with a DUI. However, it is likely that there were many witnesses who saw the man's erratic driving and this could be used as field evidence and reasonable cause that the man was intoxicated.

Although this may seem like a severe case of DUI -- since the man caused multiple accidents -- no major injuries or fatalities occurred due to the man's negligence. Unless he has a criminal history of drinking and driving or registered a very high BAC, his charges and penalties will not likely be elevated.
