South Carolina man faces Internet sex crime allegations

Like in most states, South Carolina has severe penalties involving Internet crimes. Proving a person's innocence when facing charges like identity theft, computer fraud or cyberstalking can be challenging. It becomes even more difficult if the person is facing Internet sex crime charges involving minors. In such a case, assistance from a criminal defense professional is advisable if the accused person wishes to clear his or her name.

In Columbia, South Carolina, a 37-year-old man may be in need of such assistance because he was arrested for allegedly downloading child pornography. According to the Attorney General's office, undercover detectives of the Sheriff's Office were able to download a file that contained child pornography. The file was then traced back to the man's residence. After obtaining a warrant, authorities seized electronic storage media and three computers.

The combined forces of the Attorney General's office and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force resulted in the arrest of the man. He was arrested on a second-degree charge for sexual exploitation of a minor. The charge, which is considered a felony, can lead to a 10-year prison sentence. The accused person's bond was set at $40,000.

However, that was not the end of the problems that the man is facing. He will be prohibited from having any contact with children under 17 years of age, except for his own child. He was also barred from accessing the Internet or using any electronic devices that can be used to access it. He was ordered to remain at least two blocks away from places where children gather, such as playgrounds, daycare facilities, schools and parks.

Beyond the staggering fines, numerous restrictions and a lengthy prison sentence, it is the damage to a Columbia County resident's reputation that is most troubling. The charges can also lead to emotional trauma and strained relationships between an accused person and his or her family and friends. Those negative consequences may last a very long time, if not forever.
